Motivating Students through Fine Arts

Ms. Maribel Garza, Fine Arts Teacher at Emiliano Zapata Elementary, teaches students about the Elements of Art.  Ms. Garza instructs PK-5th grades.   The elements of art are components that help the artist communicate their artwork.  Ms. Garza introduces the elements of art with focusing on line, the most basic component and yet, the most important in artwork.  Ms. Garza instructs cross-curricular instruction as art demands the knowledge of math with two- and three-dimensional figures.   When contrasting colors and shading with light, the concept of science is incorporated.  She also implements the social-emotional learning by creating feelings of movement and emotion through lines.  In all, there are 7 Elements of Art that Ms. Garza teaches throughout the school year.  Ms. Garza helps students unveil their qualities through her art class, and students look forward to applying their creativity through artwork. Studies show that giving children the opportunity to create through artwork allows for individual growth, development, and impact overall health.
